For all audiences aged 8 and up
Growing up isn't easy; neither is growing old.
It seems obvious, yet when it actually happens, it’s disorienting, what exactly is going on inside?
Sam is becoming a young girl. She is overwhelmed by her emotions when, on the day she gets her period, she realizes she cannot hold back time : she has to grow up.
But suddenly, it doesn't feel as natural as she might have expected. The pain, the shame, the blood, was she truly prepared for this ?
She needs to talk to someone who will take her seriously. She’s facing "grown-up" problems now. But adults aren't always ready to listen, and the only one she dares confide in is Rabbit—her legendary, well-worn stuffed animal.
With him, she locks herself away deep within her imagination, in the precious, painless fantasy of her childhood world, and takes us on a surreal journey in search of Grandma. And there, in this fantastical universe, Grandma is present, filled with a gentle incoherence, drifting between past and present, lost in the limbo of her own memory.
Inside Sam’s head, things are about to explode; inside Grandma’s, they are fading away. Time is running out: will she manage to speak to her in time?
*Le Jour du coquelicot* (The Day of the Poppy) tackles a sensitive, profound subject while offering viewers of all ages a way to interpret the story. At once sensitive and socially conscious, the play opens the door to family and intergenerational dialogue. It is a form that offers both a visual and poetic language and an exploration of meaning, using incisive text to address the theme without explicitly naming it.
Through a playful, theatrical dynamic, we witness the subject matter unfolding live. The staging blurs the boundaries of reality, allowing grandmothers to stop aging and stuffed rabbits to tell their stories—if only for a while. Yet this is fleeting; eventually, the clock must be allowed to start ticking again...
A funny, touching modern tale that balances the reticence of the intimate with the whimsy of childhood play, gently whisking you away to the furthest reaches of the human psyche.
